Verdict: Within a few percentage points of NordVPN on nearby servers. Long-haul performance is slightly behind Nord but comfortably ahead of budget providers. Plenty of headroom for 4K streaming, video calls, and cloud sync.

Encryption

Surfshark uses AES-256-GCM on OpenVPN and ChaCha20-Poly1305 on WireGuard — the same cryptographic standards as every audited top-tier provider. Handshake uses ECDH (Curve25519 on WireGuard).

Kill Switch

Available on Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and Linux. We forcibly killed the VPN process on each platform — traffic was blocked within ~60ms on Windows and macOS. On Android, the system-level kill switch (Always-On VPN) is the most robust option.

Jurisdiction

Netherlands-based. The country has no mandatory data retention law for VPN providers (the EU's general retention directive was struck down in 2014). Surfshark is legally not required to store user logs. The 9-Eyes concern is mostly theoretical — if there are no logs to hand over, intelligence-sharing treaties cannot compel production of data that doesn't exist.
