The Short Answer

Proton VPN is the best VPN for privacy purists — but it's not for everyone. If your top priority is trust and transparency, no other provider comes close. Swiss jurisdiction, fully open-source apps, Secure Core architecture, and a genuine free tier set Proton apart. But it's slower than NordVPN, more expensive than Surfshark, and streaming support — while improved — isn't as consistent.

Our rating: 4.5/5 — Best Privacy-Focused VPN 2026.

Swiss Jurisdiction: Why It Matters

Proton VPN is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland and incorporated under Swiss law. This matters because:

  • No 14-Eyes membership — Switzerland is not part of the Five Eyes, Nine Eyes, or Fourteen Eyes intelligence-sharing alliances
  • Strong privacy legislation — The Swiss Federal Data Protection Act (nDSG) provides some of the strongest privacy protections in the world
  • Legal precedent — Swiss courts have rejected international requests for VPN user data when they don't meet Swiss legal standards
  • Constitutional privacy — Swiss constitution explicitly protects the right to privacy in telecommunications

In practice, this means Proton VPN can't be compelled to log user data by foreign governments — and Swiss law doesn't require ISPs or VPN providers to retain connection logs.

Open-Source Everything

Proton VPN is the only major VPN provider with fully open-source client applications across every platform. Every line of code is publicly auditable on GitHub:

  • Windows client: open-source
  • macOS client: open-source
  • Linux client: open-source
  • Android app: open-source
  • iOS app: open-source

This isn't just a marketing claim. Independent security firm Securitum completed a comprehensive audit of all Proton VPN apps in 2024, and the results are publicly available. Any security researcher can inspect the code, report vulnerabilities, and verify that Proton's apps do what they claim.

No other mainstream VPN provider offers this level of transparency. NordVPN and Surfshark publish third-party audit results but keep their code proprietary. FastestVPN publishes audit summaries only.

Secure Core Architecture

Secure Core is Proton VPN's signature security feature. Instead of routing your traffic through one VPN server, Secure Core routes it through two:

  1. Your traffic first goes to a hardened server in Switzerland, Iceland, or Sweden
  2. From there, it's routed to the exit server in your chosen country

This means even if an attacker compromises the exit server or monitors the exit server's network, they can only trace traffic back to the Secure Core server — not to you. Proton owns and operates its Secure Core servers in high-security data centers (including a former military bunker under 1,000 meters of granite in Iceland).

The trade-off: Secure Core adds 20-40% latency. We measured an average speed reduction of 35% with Secure Core enabled versus standard connections. For general browsing and streaming this is acceptable, but for gaming or large file transfers, standard mode is better.

Speed Test Results

We tested Proton VPN's speeds over 60 days using the WireGuard protocol across 10 server locations:

| Server Location | Download | Upload | Latency | Speed Retention | |----------------|----------|--------|---------|-----------------| | Switzerland (nearest) | 520 Mbps | 195 Mbps | 8ms | 87% | | United States (NY) | 385 Mbps | 142 Mbps | 78ms | 64% | | United Kingdom | 445 Mbps | 168 Mbps | 22ms | 74% | | Japan | 290 Mbps | 98 Mbps | 145ms | 48% | | Australia | 265 Mbps | 85 Mbps | 182ms | 44% |

Base connection: 600 Mbps down / 250 Mbps up

Proton VPN's speeds are good but not best-in-class. NordVPN retained 89% on nearby servers versus Proton's 87%, and the gap widens on distant connections. For most users, Proton's speeds are more than sufficient — you won't notice any slowdown during normal browsing, streaming, or video calls.

Free Tier: Genuinely Usable

Proton VPN's free tier is the only reputable free VPN we recommend. Unlike most "free" VPNs that sell your data or bombard you with ads, Proton's free plan is:

  • No data caps — Unlimited bandwidth
  • No ads — Zero advertising in the app
  • No data selling — Funded by paid subscribers, not your data
  • 5 countries — US, Netherlands, Japan, Romania, Poland
  • 1 device — Single simultaneous connection

The limitations are real — you can't access streaming servers, Secure Core, or P2P servers on the free plan, and speeds are deprioritized during peak hours. But for basic browsing privacy, it's a legitimate free option that doesn't compromise your security.

Streaming Performance

Proton VPN has invested heavily in streaming support since 2024. Dedicated streaming servers are clearly labeled in the app, and results have improved significantly:

  • Netflix: Worked in 9 of 15 countries tested (US, UK, Canada reliable)
  • Disney+: Worked in 6 of 8 countries tested
  • BBC iPlayer: Worked consistently
  • Amazon Prime: Worked in US and UK
  • Hulu: Worked consistently

Streaming performance is solid but not as consistent as NordVPN (97% success) or Surfshark (93%). If streaming unblocking is your primary use case, NordVPN is the better choice. If privacy is your priority and streaming is secondary, Proton delivers.

Pricing and Plans

| Plan | Monthly | Annual | 2-Year | |------|---------|--------|--------| | Free | $0 | $0 | $0 | | VPN Plus | $9.99 | $5.99/mo | $4.99/mo | | Proton Unlimited | $12.99 | $9.99/mo | $7.99/mo |

Proton Unlimited bundles Proton Mail, Proton Calendar, Proton Drive, and Proton Pass with VPN — a compelling value if you want to move your entire digital life to a privacy-focused ecosystem.

Proton is more expensive than NordVPN ($3.39/mo), Surfshark ($1.99/mo), and FastestVPN ($1.11/mo). You're paying a premium for Swiss jurisdiction, open-source code, and the strongest privacy credentials in the industry.

Who Should Choose Proton VPN

Choose Proton VPN if:

  • Privacy and transparency are your top priorities
  • You want open-source, independently audited apps
  • Swiss jurisdiction matters to you
  • You're already in the Proton ecosystem (Mail, Drive, Calendar)
  • You want a trustworthy free VPN tier

Look elsewhere if:

  • Maximum speed is your priority (NordVPN)
  • Streaming unblocking is your main use case (NordVPN)
  • Budget is your primary concern (Surfshark or FastestVPN)
  • You need unlimited devices on one plan (Surfshark)

The Bottom Line

Proton VPN is the gold standard for VPN privacy. No other provider matches its combination of Swiss jurisdiction, fully open-source apps, Secure Core architecture, and independent audits. You pay a premium for this trust — but if privacy is why you're getting a VPN in the first place, Proton is the most credible choice available.
