How Much Speed Do You Actually Need?

Most people overpay for internet speed they don't need. Here's what each activity actually requires:

| Activity | Download Needed | Upload Needed | |----------|----------------|---------------| | Web browsing | 5 Mbps | 1 Mbps | | Email | 1 Mbps | 1 Mbps | | Zoom/Teams (HD) | 3 Mbps | 3 Mbps | | Zoom/Teams (Gallery) | 4 Mbps | 3 Mbps | | Netflix HD | 5 Mbps | — | | Netflix 4K | 25 Mbps | — | | Online gaming | 10 Mbps | 5 Mbps | | Large file upload | 10+ Mbps | 20+ Mbps | | Cloud sync (heavy) | 20+ Mbps | 20+ Mbps |

VPN Speed Overhead

A VPN adds encryption overhead. With modern protocols:

  • WireGuard/NordLynx: 5-15% speed reduction
  • OpenVPN UDP: 15-25% reduction
  • OpenVPN TCP: 20-30% reduction

So if you need 25 Mbps for 4K streaming, a 30 Mbps connection with VPN (WireGuard) gives you ~25-28 Mbps — plenty.

Speed for Multiple Users

Each user/device adds to the total. A household of 4 where everyone is on video calls simultaneously needs:

  • 4 × 3 Mbps = 12 Mbps download minimum
  • Plus headroom for background updates: ~25-50 Mbps recommended
  • With VPN overhead: ~30-60 Mbps base connection

How to Test Your Speed

  1. Without VPN: Run speedtest.net — this is your base speed
  2. With VPN: Connect VPN, run speedtest.net again — this shows VPN overhead
  3. Compare: If the difference is more than 20%, try a different server or protocol
  4. See our VPN speed optimization guide for fixes

When to Upgrade Your Internet

You need more speed if:

  • Video calls freeze or pixelate regularly
  • Streaming buffers frequently
  • Large file uploads take hours
  • Multiple people can't use the internet simultaneously
  • Speed tests consistently show less than 25 Mbps
