VPN on iOS: What Apple Allows (and Doesn't)

iOS VPN support is solid but more restrictive than Android. Apple doesn't allow system-level always-on VPN for consumer apps (only MDM-enrolled devices), and split tunneling is not possible due to platform restrictions. Despite these limitations, all major VPN providers offer excellent iOS apps.

What iOS Can't Do (Android Can)

  • No split tunneling — iOS routes all traffic through VPN or none. No per-app routing
  • No system-level always-on — VPN apps use "On Demand" rules instead (works well but not identical)
  • No sideloading — VPN apps must come from the App Store

Setup (2 Minutes)

  1. Open the App Store
  2. Search for your VPN (NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN, etc.)
  3. Download and install
  4. Open the app, log in
  5. Tap Connect — iOS will ask to add a VPN configuration, approve it
  6. In the VPN app settings, enable "Connect on Demand" for automatic connection

iOS-Specific Settings

  • Connect on Demand: Most VPN apps support iOS "On Demand" rules. Enable to auto-connect when joining Wi-Fi networks
  • Trusted networks: Some apps let you set trusted networks (home Wi-Fi) where VPN won't auto-connect
  • iCloud Private Relay: Apple's built-in privacy feature covers ONLY Safari traffic. It's NOT a VPN. Use a real VPN for full device protection
  • Battery impact: With WireGuard/IKEv2, expect 3-5% additional battery drain. Acceptable for all-day use
  • Kill switch: iOS VPN apps implement their own kill switches since there's no OS-level option

Our Top Pick for iOS

ExpressVPN — The most polished iOS experience. Lightway protocol connects in under 1 second, On Demand works flawlessly, and the app is beautifully designed for iOS. NordVPN is a close second with NordLynx speeds.
