The Messaging Security Spectrum

Not all "encrypted" messaging is equal. There's a huge difference between transport encryption (WhatsApp messages to Meta's servers) and end-to-end encryption (Signal where even Signal can't read messages).

Platform Comparison

| Platform | E2E Encrypted | Metadata Collected | Open Source | Who Can Read Messages | |----------|--------------|-------------------|-------------|---------------------| | Signal | Always (all messages) | Minimal (phone number only) | Yes (client + server) | Only you + recipient | | WhatsApp | Default for personal | Extensive (contacts, groups, timing) | No | Only you + recipient (but Meta has metadata) | | Telegram | Only in "Secret Chats" | Moderate | Client only | Telegram can read regular chats | | Slack | No (enterprise key management available) | Extensive | No | Slack + your employer | | Microsoft Teams | In transit only | Extensive | No | Microsoft + your employer | | iMessage | Yes (Apple-to-Apple) | Moderate | No | Only you + recipient (Apple devices only) | | Discord | No | Extensive | No | Discord can read all messages |

Our Recommendations

For Sensitive Personal Communication: Signal

Signal is the gold standard. End-to-end encrypted by default, open-source, minimal metadata, and run by a nonprofit. Use it for personal conversations, sensitive discussions, and anything you wouldn't want a third party to read.

For Team Communication: Your Company's Choice

Use whatever your company mandates (usually Slack or Teams). These are not end-to-end encrypted, and your employer can read messages. This is by design — companies need oversight of work communications. Don't discuss personal matters on work platforms.

For International Communication: WhatsApp + VPN

WhatsApp is end-to-end encrypted for messages and widely used internationally. The concern is Meta's metadata collection (who you talk to, when, how often). For the actual message content, it's secure. Use a VPN in countries that block WhatsApp calls.

What to Avoid

  • SMS/MMS — Unencrypted. Can be intercepted. Vulnerable to SIM swap attacks
  • Regular phone calls — Not encrypted in most cases. Use Signal or WhatsApp calls instead
  • Telegram "regular chats" — NOT end-to-end encrypted. Only "Secret Chats" are. Most people don't know this
  • Email for sensitive content — Standard email is not end-to-end encrypted. Use Signal or ProtonMail instead

The Metadata Problem

Even with end-to-end encryption, metadata reveals a lot:

  • Who you talk to — Your contact patterns
  • When you communicate — Your schedule and habits
  • How often — Relationship intensity
  • Your location (if GPS enabled) — Where you are when messaging

Signal collects the least metadata of any major platform. WhatsApp encrypts content but Meta collects extensive metadata.

How We Verified

Encryption claims verified against published technical documentation. Metadata collection analyzed from privacy policies and independent research. Signal Protocol specifications reviewed. April 2026.
