VPN on Apple TV
Three ways to use a VPN on Apple TV: native tvOS app (new!), Smart DNS, or router VPN. Here's how to set up each method.
Three Methods Compared
| Method | Difficulty | Encryption | Speed Impact | Geo-Unblock |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Native tvOS App | Easy | Yes | 5-10% slower | Yes |
| Smart DNS | Easy | No | ~0% impact | Yes |
| Router VPN | Medium | Yes | 5-15% slower | Yes |
Method 1: Native tvOS App (Easiest)
Available since tvOS 17. Requires Apple TV 4K (2nd gen or newer).
- 1. Open App Store on Apple TV
- 2. Search for your VPN (ExpressVPN, NordVPN)
- 3. Download and install
- 4. Log in (pair via phone for easier entry)
- 5. Select server country and connect
- 6. Open your streaming app — content unblocked
Method 2: Smart DNS
No encryption but zero speed impact. Get DNS addresses from your VPN provider.
- 1. Get Smart DNS addresses from your VPN account (e.g., ExpressVPN MediaStreamer)
- 2. On Apple TV: Settings > Network > Wi-Fi > your network
- 3. Configure DNS > Manual
- 4. Enter the DNS addresses from your provider
- 5. Restart Apple TV
Method 3: Router VPN
Protects Apple TV + all other devices. Requires VPN-capable router.
- 1. Install VPN on your router (see our router VPN guide)
- 2. Connect Apple TV to your router's Wi-Fi
- 3. All Apple TV traffic is automatically encrypted and geo-shifted
- 4. Change server location on router to switch streaming libraries
